Why Are These Procedures Done?

We may recommend a root canal when the inner pulp of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed. Some of the reasons this may happen include:

  • When a cavity extends deeply into the tooth
  • If a cracked or chipped tooth exposes the pulp
  • After multiple procedures on the same tooth cause stress and inflammation, increasing the risk of infection
  • When dental trauma has damaged the pulp internally
What Are Some Signs That A Root Canal Is Needed?

Even before we examine you, you may suspect the need for a root canal if you notice certain symptoms. Earlier treatment is always better, so call us right away if you experience these signs:

  • Persistent toothache, especially when chewing
  • Lingering sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures
  • Swollen or tender gums around the affected tooth
  • Darkening or discoloration of the tooth
  • Presence of a small bump or abscess on the gums near the affected tooth

We’ll remove the infected or damaged pulp, disinfect the tooth and seal it. During the procedure, we will thoroughly clean the root canals and fill them with a special material for stability and to prevent reinfection. We’ll top the newly restored tooth with a crown.

Are Root Canals Painful?

Thanks to effective local anesthesia during the procedure and, if needed, painkillers administered afterward, you should not feel any pain. You may experience some mild discomfort or sensitivity. If so, this can be managed with an over-the-counter painkiller.
