Dental Implants: The Ideal Option To Replace A Lost Tooth

If you’ve lost a tooth due to a cavity or injury – or if you expect to need an extraction for any reason – you have a decision to make. How will you fill the gap in your smile?  While dentures and bridges are still an option, the best option is usually a dental implant. Associates In Dentistry performs dental implants to replace lost teeth.

What Is A Dental Implant?

A dental implant consists of two parts. A titanium post serves as an artificial root. We surgically place this post into the jawbone, where it fuses with the bone through a process called osseointegration. Later, after the post has successfully fused, we top it with a custom-made crown. This creates a fully functional replacement tooth.

What Are The Benefits Of Dental Implants?

Dental implants offer many advantages over other tooth replacement options:

  • Implants have a natural appearance. They look and feel like your real teeth, enhancing the aesthetics of your smile.
  • When properly cared for, they can last a lifetime.
  • Unlike dentures, implants remain permanently in the mouth, allowing for normal eating and speaking.
  • Implants help maintain jawbone integrity by preventing bone loss that may occur with missing teeth.
  • Unlike bridges, which require grinding down the teeth on either side, implants do not affect adjacent teeth.
How Long Does It Take To Get Implants?

Patience is required, as the process will generally take several months. The post will require several months to fuse with your jawbone. Only then can the crown be secured in place.

How Do I Know If This Is The Right Choice For Me?

If you’re an adult with good oral and general health, you’re likely a candidate. Required are:

  • Healthy gums
  • Adequate jawbone density to support the implant
  • Good overall health for proper healing

If you have suffered any bone loss, we may need to complete a bone graft first to ensure a strong foundation.

Do Dental Implants Require Any Special Care?

Maintaining your implants is similar to caring for your natural teeth. Regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups are essential for ensuring the longevity of your implants.
