How Do You Know You Need A Root Canal?

Of course, you’ll need a professional examination for a diagnosis and treatment plan. But if you are you experiencing any of these symptoms, a root canal may be in your future:

  • Severe tooth pain: Intense tooth pain, especially when chewing or biting, is a common sign.
  • Sensitivity: Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after the source is removed, may mean you have nerve damage or infection.
  • Swollen or tender gums: Especially if you have an abscess (a small pus-filled pocket) near the affected tooth, this can be a sign of infection.
  • Tooth discoloration: A darkened tooth could be an indication of nerve damage.
  • Deep decay: You may require a root canal to prevent further damage.
  • Injury: If a tooth has been injured, you might require a root canal to prevent further damage or infection.

Why Are So Many People Afraid Of Root Canals?

Some people suffer from dental anxiety, perhaps from an early bad experience. People are afraid the process will hurt, but modern techniques and anesthesia usually mean the procedure will be pain-free – or nearly so. Some people fear needles and drilling and others experience anxiety from the sounds, smells and sensations of dental procedures.

If You Have Dental Fears, Please Talk To Us About Them!

We want you to feel comfortable during every procedure, including root canals. We’re happy to explain the procedure in order to help set your mind at rest. A positive mindset, in which you focus more on the benefits of the procedure – like preserving your tooth and obtaining pain relief – may help you feel more comfortable.

How Long Does It Take To Get A Root Canal?

Expect a routine root canal to take 60-90 minutes. Your front teeth are simpler because they typically only have one canal, while a back tooth will have several canals and will require more time.

What Happens During A Root Canal Procedure?

We will verify your need for a root canal by taking X-rays. We will want to be able to clearly see the extent of the infection and as well as the shape of each of the canals. Every tooth is different. We will be on the lookout for small and hard-to-find accessory canals, which sometimes branch off the main root canal.

  • First, we will numb the area around the affected tooth with local anesthesia so you feel comfortable during the procedure.
  • We make a small opening in the crown of the tooth to access the pulp chamber.
  • Next, we remove the infected pulp and clean and shape the inside of the tooth.
  • The cleaned canals require careful filling.
  • The opening is sealed.
  • A crown is placed to restore your tooth’s shape, function and appearance. In most cases, you’ll first get a temporary and later a permanent crown.
